Project Description
Glaciers & Northern Lights with Private Glacier Hike!
Are you ready for an unforgettable 3-day Iceland adventure packed with breathtaking landscapes and incredible icy experiences? Join Moonwalker on a journey along the legendary South Coast, featuring stunning waterfalls, black sand beaches, a Private Glacier Hike, exploration of a natural Katla Ice Cave, and the thrilling hunt for the Northern Lights. Get ready to be amazed by Iceland’s beauty and allure!
Day 1: South Coast Icons & Your Private Ice Trek
Your adventure begins with pick-up from Reykjavik as we head along the iconic South Coast. We’ll visit two of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls: the elegant Seljalandsfoss, where you can walk the pathway behind the cascading water (conditions permitting), and the powerful Skógafoss, a thunderous drop perfect for photos.
Next, prepare for the day’s highlight: a Private Glacier Hike on a beautiful South Coast outlet glacier (typically Sólheimajökull). Geared up with provided crampons, ice axes, and helmets, your certified Moonwalker guide will lead you on an exclusive trek across the ice, exploring fascinating formations and crevasses away from the larger crowds. It’s an invigorating and personal experience on the ice.
We continue to the dramatic Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, with its striking basalt columns and powerful waves, passing through the charming coastal village of Vík. As darkness falls, we arrive at our comfortable accommodation along the South Coast, strategically chosen for its potential for Northern Lights sightings.
Day 2: Realm of Icebergs – Glacier Lagoon & Diamond Beach
Day two takes us further east towards the magnificent Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Prepare to step into a realm of surreal beauty as you witness countless icebergs, calved from the immense Vatnajökull glacier, floating in the serene lagoon. Marvel at their shapes, sizes, and colors, and keep an eye out for seals swimming amongst them.
Adjacent to the lagoon is the stunning Diamond Beach, where ice chunks from Jökulsárlón wash ashore and sparkle like diamonds on the black volcanic sand. It’s a photographer’s paradise and a truly unique scene that highlights the journey of the glacier ice.
We spend ample time soaking in the magic of this area before heading to our accommodation for the second night, located in the Glacier Lagoon vicinity to maximize our chances for a successful Northern Lights hunt.
Day 3: Inside the Ice – Katla Ice Cave Exploration
On your final day, prepare for a truly unique experience as we venture to the Katla Ice Cave. Located near the formidable Katla volcano beneath the Kötlujökull outlet glacier, these natural ice caves are famous for their stunning blue ice intertwined with dramatic layers of black volcanic ash.
Led by your expert guide, you’ll explore the ice cave’s tunnels and chambers, witnessing the incredible formations carved by nature. It’s a surreal and unforgettable environment that offers a direct connection to the forces of ice and fire in Iceland.
After this incredible sub-glacial exploration, we begin our scenic drive back towards Reykjavik, stopping at points of interest and reflecting on the diverse “icy wonders” you’ve witnessed over these three remarkable days.
The Northern Lights Hunt
Each evening of your 3-day tour during the season (September 1st to April 15th), your Moonwalker guide will actively look for the magical Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). We choose accommodation locations away from light pollution to give you the best possible chance of witnessing this breathtaking natural phenomenon dance across the night sky. While we can never guarantee sightings as they are subject to solar activity and clear skies, we put you in the right place at the right time to increase your odds.

Awesome Day at Landmannalaugar & Hekla Volcano
We had a great day with Bessi and Cami. We went up Hekla volcano where rental cars can’t go and we ventured into the Landmannalaugar canyon. Our last stop was the most breathtaking place I had seen in all of Iceland..a canyon that was surrounded by waterfalls cascading from the top and even seaping out of the canyon walls to the beautiful water filled canyon below. We also thoroughly enjoyed Cami keeping us company. We had a fantastic day and it was awesome to not have to plan and drive.
A Great Tour!!
My brother, daughter and I all agree that this was our favorite tour. We lucked out with sun and blue skies and the scenery, especially at Hekla was just gorgeous! Bessie was a great host for his county, we really enjoyed talking to him about all manner of topics!
The bakery we grabbed lunch from was delicious, my brother wanted to stop there a few days later when we did a self tour to Vík. And having his dog along was especially nice as we are dog lovers and ours have sadly passed.
Bessie, hope to see you in the future if we make it back, thanks for the hospitality!
BEST Day Ever!!!
Our day with Bessi and Cami was AMAZING!!! We smiled and laughed all day long! Bessi–you are a gift to the tourist industry! THANK YOU for taking us on an adventure we will never forget!! I have so many pictures (I will send you some!). Oh, and thanks for ‘holding’ me at the top of the crater so I wouldn’t blow off HA HA!! Your truck is a ‘Beast’ and Heckla is a wonderland! Whoever reads this….do not go to Iceland with booking a day (or two or three) with Moonwalker Tours!! Mindy & John, Edmonds, WA USA
Amazing Iceland trip wit Moonwalker!
I just finished an eight day trip with my two grown sons in Iceland. Moonwalker tours had been recommended to me by a good friend who had visited Iceland three times before using the same tour group. It was the best decision I made planning for this trip! Bessi Jonnson was our guide on two separate day trips. He is an excellent guide. Knowledgeable, jovial and fun, great rapport with his clients, very easy to communicate with before the trip during the planning stages, and he had a wonderful dog, Camy, Who joined us on one of our day trips. He was also very helpful for advice for the days we were touring on our own. The two trips we took with Moonwalker were Golden Circle and Langjökull Glacier AND Landmannalaugar & Hekla Volcano. Both were fantastic excursions. His vehicles , Moon 1 and 2 Are comfortable, stylish, powerful and up to the challenges of any conditions you may encounter exploring Iceland! He also played really great Icelandic music on our tours. We stopped anytime we needed to take photographs and he made sure we stopped for food and bathroom breaks as needed. I will be visiting Iceland again, possibly during the winter season, and I will definitely use Moonwalker again!
Best day in Iceland!
Bessi did an awesome job of avoiding bad weather and making the most of our daylight hours. He even took us to more sights than we anticipated. His knowledge of the island and friendly demeanor made this my favorite day spent in Iceland! Can’t recommend Moonwalkers enough!!
Our Third Trip to Iceland with Bessi
We have been using Bessi for three years in a row now. Been traveling to Iceland usually in September or October months and absolutely love everything about it. Bessi has become one of our good friends and we always have an adventure with him. I had thought we did all of his tours but there is one missing that we haven’t done, so we may be coming back to Iceland for a fourth year. As always he was on time every morning and even brought Cami with us on our thorsmork hike. Our trip to lanndmannalugar was definitely a trip we will never forget. We were absolutely the only people in the entire area, other than the rangers by the bathroom rest stop. The views were incredible and even when the rangers told us not to continue down the “difficult” path home due to a massive snow storm the night before. Bessi asked us if we wanted to push through and of course we said yes. We always trust Bessi with our lives haha. Sure enough we made it through the path the rangers said was impassable with Moon1. But we did get stuck in a river that was frozen over for an hour haha. Getting out of it was the most fun my fiancé and Bessi had. The second trip Thorsmork was again amazing, Bessi took us to a glacier we went to two years ago and we saw first hand the effects of global warming and how this once glacier is now called dead ice. Thorsmork was beautiful again only a few people in sight and we were the only ones who trekked to the end of a canyon for an amazing surprise. Cami was with us the whole way enjoying every second of it. Bessi is the best and even gave us the best recommendations for food and other sights to see while we rented a car the rest of the trip. I will always recommend Moonwalker!!
